Traditions & Special Events

8th Grade Pasta Dinner
The 8th graders hold a pasta dinner during the winter. This dinner is one of the 8th grade classes' key fundraisers. All proceeds benefit 8th grade class trips.

Crafty Moms
Crafty Moms is a key fundraising event that is held on during December. Volunteers collect or make quality craft items that are then sold in the school basement at Christmas time. The children are given the opportunity to do their Christmas shopping at the Crafty Moms’ Store. When the Crafty Moms’ Store is “open for business”, volunteers help wrap presents, set-up, clean-up, and help with the bookkeeping. The children really look forward to this event.

D.A.R.E. Program (Drug Alcohol Resistance Education)
This program is taught and provided to our 5th graders by the Stonington Police Department Youth Officer.

Family Fun Walk
The SMS "Family Fun Walk" is St. Michael School's first major fundraiser of the year; it occurs in October. This event is a festive day that includes a sponsored walk along with activities, food and music. This event has become a tradition at St. Michael School; we always have a large turn out of SMS families. In addition to raising money through the sponsored walk, we also raise money through corporate sponsorship and individual donations. The students participate heavily in this event and a percentage of our proceeds are always given back to the community.

Field Day
Every June, St. Michael School holds Field Day. This one day event is organized by the Physical Education Teacher. Volunteers help to organize and coordinate food for each class as well as set-up and clean-up for the event. Volunteers also help with a variety of sporting events. Field Day is a special treat for the entire student body and faculty.

Grandparents' Lunch
As part of the student activities for the graduating class, the 8th graders invite their grandparents to a lunch in the Church Hall. This has been a tradition at St. Michael School for years. The lunch is usually held in the spring.

Ice Cream Social
St. Michael School holds an Ice Cream Social at the end of August to welcome the entering kindergarteners & their families as well as other new St. Michael School families.

Live & Silent Auction - 2008 Theme, "A Night in Aruba"
This event is held during the Spring. This is one of the school's major fundraisers. Profits from this event go towards funding and supporting the school’s educational programs.

May Baskets
"May Baskets" has been a tradition at St. Michael School since the school opened in 1873. When the nuns ran the school, the students would purchase various toiletries, creams, lotions, soaps, powers, etc. for the sisters, and put them in a basket as a “present” for the sister-teacher. Over the year, this “theme” has developed into what we now call “May Baskets”. The Room Representative for each class is responsible for coordinating the basket for their class. The Room Rep collects donations from each student/family, and a gift or gifts are purchased for the teacher. The May Basket is presented to the teacher on or about May 1.

Read Across America (new for 08)
"Read Across America" (RAA) is an annual nationwide program that takes place in schools and libraries to promote literacy among all ages. RAA occurs the same week in March, coinciding with Dr. Seuss' birthday. The St. Michael School PTO coordinates a week-long series of events for all classes. The week's events include students donating a book to non-profit organizations, guest readers reading Dr. Seuss books to the younger students, Dr. Seuss/Cat in the Hat art projects, and a Birthday party for Dr. Seuss. The older students visit preschools, nursing homes, and an adult care center to read to the students/residents there. Our goal for the older children is for them to share their love of reading with children of a young age, and brighten up a senior citizen's day by reading and interacting with them for part of their day.

Red Ribbon Week
This week usually occurs in October. Red Ribbon Week is a program that signifies “Turn Your Back on Drugs”. The students wear a red ribbon to show their support of this theme. Various activities are held throughout the week, one of these events is a poster contest.

Teachers' Luncheon
This luncheon is an annual St. Michael School tradition held during Catholic Schools Week. The Parent-Teacher Organization coordinates the luncheon. Volunteers help to set-up and assist the 8th grade class who serve as servers and dishwashers. Volunteers also help plan the luncheon menu and prepare the food.
